See a need, fill a need. This is how Lithium Batteries South Africa (LBSA) came to be.

The CEO, Bain Viljoen, started assembling LiFePO4 batteries at the end of 2019. He initially imported cells for himself as an alternative power solution for his home during load shedding. That's when he realized how unnecessarily high the prices for local LiFePO4 batteries were and that he was going to do something about it. He will provide an affordable, high quality, locally manufactured battery for South Africans with first class after sales service.

The LBSA battery was uncomplicated for households, businesses and off-grid systems. Battery sizes range from a small 2.6kWh battery up to and including a 10.6kWh battery, depending on the expectations and price range.

And so LBSA expanded rapidly thanks to the loyal solar resellers and installers. We went from assembling batteries in a garage with just a few loving family members helping out after work and on weekends. To have a fully operational factory of 7000 square meters with enough staff to produce not less than two hundred batteries per day. After all these years of hard work and continuous growth, we have been recognized by some of the most popular inverters in South Africa such as Growatt, Luxpower, Deye, Sunsynk, Victron, Solis and SMA. We conduct rigorous testing to prevent any problems that may arise. If a problem appears, we have a 24-hour line where we provide the original South African service and a quick turnaround time that you crave.

But we didn't stop there. LBSA has developed a battery solution for the industrial sector to assist businesses with large power needs. This is a High Voltage battery unlike anyone has seen. Developed with a strong emphasis on safety, reliability, and efficiency; the HV-104-WFRE is equipped with features that guarantee ease of use and eliminate downtime. It includes failover CAN communication, hot battery adding, and independent charge and discharge control, among other capabilities.

LBSA TIMELINE

Since our establishment in 2019, we have been dedicated to providing high-quality lithium batteries to meet the ever-growing demand for energy storage solutions. We began by offering DIY lithium battery kits as a more affordable and accessible backup power solution, giving South Africans the ability to manage load shedding on their own terms. In 2020, we introduced fully built battery units that delivered reliable and seamless backup power for homes and small businesses.

By 2021, these built units had grown in popularity, and LBSA became recognized as a trusted household brand. In 2022, we expanded our product line with larger-capacity units, offering backup power on a much greater scale. Our commitment to innovation led to a major design update in 2023, where we developed a more compact and slim form factor without compromising performance. In 2024, we introduced smaller, budget-friendly battery options to meet the needs of cost-conscious clients. Most recently, in 2025, we launched our high-voltage battery system designed to assist commercial sectors in tackling the rising costs of electricity.
